On Wednesday 4th November, BPS Singapore undertook an evening seminar to a full house of CILT Singapore members, with the subject heading " How to apply Industrial Engineering Techniques (IE) in the Sully Chain to cut costs and reduce wastage."
Attendees included representatives from DB Schenker, KWE, TNT, DHL, UTi, Keppel, Agility, CMA-CGM, iDS, Motorola, Future Electronics, HP and a strong delegation from the logistics division of the Singapore Ministry of Defence plus others.
Fronted by Vincent Cheung, the talk focussed on the IE expertise contained within BPS and proceeded to explain to attendees the benefits of introducing some, if not all, into the logistics workplace. The presentation looked at 3 specific aspects, namely;
- – To know and understand the basic Industrial Engineering (IE) concepts
- – To appreciate the approach to the various IE techniques
- – To apply different IE techniques in different SCM solutions
From our direct experience with existing clients, we were able to show how cost savings could be achieved and improvements made in day to day operations if applying even some of the techniques that were outlines, such as, Time Study, Bottleneck Analysis, Queuing Theory, Throughput Analysis, Resource Utilisation Ratios, Operations Research, Buffer Design, Line Balancing, Operations Flow Chart, Critical Path Methods & Ergonomics.
In what was an enjoyable event, we trust the attendees were able to absorb sufficient IE information to want to learn more.
